A majority of people nowadays live in cities and it is estimated that an even higher percentage of the population will live in cities in the near future. While more then two thirds of emissions are produced in cities, they also present good opportunities for new strategies and innovation.
The EU Mission on sustainable and smart cities therefore aims to make cities climate-neutral. This will be achieved through bottom-up processes, new forms of governance and climate contracts. 100 cities were selected to function as hubs for cooperation and development of climate-friendly and smart solutions, making cities drivers for sustainable growth by 2030. The aim thereof is to make the rest of EU cities follow this example by 2050 to support the EU’s goal to reach climate-neutrality by then.

The following practical examples serve to demonstrate what role social innovation plays in the EU-Mission on cities.
Our goal with these examples is to make seemingly abstract social innovation (SI) concepts tangible through real-world cases. We aim to illustrate how social innovation (such as changes in practices and behaviours, the introduction of new ways of working and collaborating, and the reshaping of social and institutional relationships) can meaningfully contribute to achieving the EU Missions.
