Soil is essential for various ecosystems and life-sustaining processes on Earth. However, the health of our soils is degrading due to unsustainable human practices in agriculture, forestry and other industries and human food choices.
The EU Mission on soils aims to restore the health of our soils by funding research, creating 100 living labs, increases citizen awareness and develop a framework for soil monitoring. Eight objectives have been formulated to achieve this goal. These are: reduce desertification, conserve soil organic carbon stocks, stop soil pollution and enhance restoration, prevent erosion, improve soil structure to enhance soil biodiversity, reduce the EU global footprint on soils and improve soil literacy in society.
